2018 - 2019 Grant Highlights

NEED grants allow unique learning opportunities across all NPS classrooms. All teachers and staff are welcome to submit proposals during the grant cycle. And if you ever needed a reminder of the ways that classroom learning has changed over the years, check out the projects below!

Projects from past years

NEED has been funding NPS grants for 13 years. These programs inspire kids to learn creatively and think critically- and none of these programs happen without the support of NPS teachers, staff, parents, and sponsors. THANK YOU for everything you do to support NPS programs.

Grant approved: Hokki Stools
November 15th, 2017
Mrs. Neumann - 6th grade math teacher at NMS

"
Since the start of the school year the Hokki stools have provided alternate seating for not only children who have difficulty sitting still, but for all children.  Some students request a stool.  Other students who do not request it, find when they are placed at the desk with the stool, they like the alternate seating.  Let's face it, sitting in a hard seat all day is not optimal for anyone, never mind a sixth grader.  I can see students moving around on the stool while sitting at their desks and working.  I have had special needs students come and borrow the stools to use when they are testing or working in another room.   I am very happy with the Hokki stools. Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to give my students another seating option.
Sincerely,
Lisa (Gracia) Neumann"

Grant approved: Building Core Focus and 20 Stability Balls
March 31st, 2016
Mrs. Ryan - 2nd Grade teacher at JCS

"The stability balls have been working out very well.  I've been able to give them to the students who really need and benefit from them most.  Not all students wanted to use them, but at least they were given the opportunity to try them.

I've had several parents comment on how motivated their child has become to use the balls.  Some have even requested they now be an accommodation for their child.

I've kept rules the rules to using the balls pretty simple.  Utters remain on the floor, and feet must remain flat on the floor as well.  We've had no injuries, and only one ball has popped.

Overall, I'm very pleased with how they were received and how well they've worked!  I can't thank you all enough for giving me the opportunity to use them in the large classroom."

Grant approved: Building Core Focus and 20 Stability Balls

April 1st, 2016
Mrs. Bjork - 3rd Grade teacher at LGN

"The stability balls have been amazing! In September we sent home a permission forms to the parents and we had 100% send back a "yes" to using the balls in class. At LGN in my 3rd grade class, we have set up teams of 2 or 3 to rotate the balls on a daily basis...while I also have 2 students that use them everyday for different sensory needs.

All the students enjoy them and I have also seen less distracted behavior and longer ability to attend to tasks and lessons. Their writing and posture have improved as well. I am very happy with the outcomes and I am very grateful to have them!
Thank You Again!"

Grant approved: Need to Hear. 30 Headsets with microphones for computer lab.
April 4th, 2016
Susan Cashton - Technology Teacher LGN/HAY

"Students have enjoyed using the headsets in the HAY computer lab. I have seen a large improvement in successful completion of the keyboarding program Type to Learn 4 due to student ability to listen to personalized instruction as they learn to type.

I have over 90 students that will finish the program by the end of this year. Students are currently using the recording function on the headphones to incorporate their own sounds and words in their Scratch programming projects.

Special needs students, as needed, have been using the speak feature in their Google accounts to search and word process projects and to listen to websites and directions read to them. At the end of the year, I plan on trying out screencasting.

The quality of the headsets has been a plus. I have only had one set in need of replacement, and it was done promptly. The headsets are a great addition to the implementation of technology in the computer lab."

Grant approved: Therapy Apps! Partial donation to Speech department for iPad and apps.
April 5th, 2016
Carol Clark - Speech Teacher, NPS

"Receiving the ipad through the grant has been wonderful!  I am so happy and feel so fortunate to have received it!

The students have truly enjoyed this artic app I purchased. It takes and records data on each child so they can see their progress. They can also record their speech sounds in words, phrases, sentences and stories and critique their production on the play back.

Thanks again for helping me to get this ipad...it has truly been a great addition to some of my therapy sessions.  I am now trying to meet the needs of all students to purchase a variety of apps!!"
